Key Roles: Event Staff, Steward
Location: The Eden Project
Date: December 2014
Annually the Eden Project and the Eden Kitchen play host to a large range of stalls from Cornwall and beyond. The craft stalls range from gifts to home accessories, stocking fillers, clothing and jewellery. There is also a large collection of food producers and suppliers that feature in the Food Hall. The organising team give their time free of charge and all stallholders donate 15% of all their takings from both the preview evening and the main fair day, helping to raise even more for the Macmillan charity.
A number of students from Creative Events Management were offered the chance to volunteer at the fair, helping in a variety of roles including, helping the stall holders get set up on the first day, selling raffle tickets, collecting charity donations etc. I thought this was a very good opportunity to see how a charity event on this scale is run.
Over the weekend I utilised my sociability as well as my organisational skills particularly when consulting the fair plan in order to make sure the craft suppliers were all in the correct place. Only a few stall holders could unload at one time, therefore there was a very quick turn around time in getting them set up before the next group could unload. All the volunteers were needed for this task and I believe we all worked well as a team allowing the transition between each supplier to be relatively smooth.
