Key Roles: Event Team, Artist Liaison, Financial Management, Social Media Marketing, Negotiator and Communications Manager
Location: Jacob's Ladder staircase and Inn, Falmouth, Cornwall
Date: 8th April 2017
‘Kernow Uncovered’ was a multi-arts exhibition that took place on the 8th April 2017 at Jacob’s Ladder Inn and staircase. The event was planned, and managed by four event management students who designed the event with the purpose to ‘uncover undercover artists’. To improve accessibility to artists and performers that may not have previously had an opportunity to share their work with the public, and to try and enhance their influence and notoriety. Due to the nature of the event, it was not ticketed and all were welcome to attend.
The managers utilised both indoor and outdoor spaces, which aimed to take the audience on an artistic journey. This gave the event a uniqueness that has not been seen in Falmouth before. The event ran all day and was designed in three parts. 12pm - 5pm saw the running of two exhibitions. The first, an outdoor exhibition of live street artists who used a washable chalk spray to create artwork along one side of the Jacob’s Ladder staircase. The second, an indoor exhibition held in the pub which showcased an array of artists work which included sculpture, illustration and paintings. The third part of the event was the evening entertainment which took place from 6pm - 12pm and consisted of a number of spoken word poets and musicians.
One of my main roles and arguably one of the most important was to negotiate with Cornwall Council and Falmouth Council to gain permission for the use of Jacob's Ladder staircase. I enjoyed this as it was an exciting make or break moment for the event. It has sparked more interest in becoming a location manager. I was also in charge of the entire indoor exhibition, sourcing the artists and creating the exhibition boards for the artists to hang their work.
I really enjoyed the creative process of seeing the boards come together to obtaining each artists bio's and hanging the work. It all came together with very minor set backs. I believe Kernow Uncovered has been my most successful event and has expanded my knowledge on exhibitions which is certainly a sector I would like to gain more experience in.
