1920's Burlesque Night

Key Roles: Event Team, Artist Liaison

Location: The AMATA Centre (Academy of Music and Theatre Arts), Falmouth University

Date: 12th January 2016

1920's Burlesque Night was an assessed university event. The course was divided into groups and allocated a room in the AMATA centre where we were to deliver our events. I was in a project team of 5. In order to make the process more professional we gave ourselves a team name; SJ Events.

In a burlesque style lounge the team provided a themed evening of entertainment consisting of: music from the Jazz Society, a magnificent drag performer and a burlesque dancer. Drinks were also served at a licensed bar. The aim of the event was to provide a unique experience for University students.

I was excited about my role within the group as it was a new experience to liaise with artists. I was in charge of sourcing the performers and to maintain a professional level of communication with them, keeping them informed and making sure they were fully equipped and prepared for the event. Another of my responsibilities was to manage the stakeholders on the day of the event; overseeing the smooth running of the set-up; working closely with the technicians to achieve the best layout.

The team supported each other in supplying appropriate documents such as risk assessments, schedules and contracts. We also worked together to ensure full promotional coverage over various media platforms such as Facebook and twitter.

I learnt a lot from this experience, particularly the importance of always having a detailed contingency plan. Despite facing some difficulties I believe that I worked well in my role; my strong communication skills helping to secure the performers, and negotiating terms in the contracts.

Transferable Skills; Leadership, Time Management, Events Coordination, Verbal Communication, Operational Understanding
