Key Roles: Exhibition Invigilator

Location: Redruth

Date: 21 - 23 October

Inland Art Festival is a contemporary art festival, bringing diverse communities together in the historic town of Redruth, Cornwall. The Future Project works as a platform for alternative, possible and impossible, weird and wonderful futures. Working with local residents, artists, academics and musicians, the festival uses architecture, environment, social and cultural references to create a 3 day alternative future around Redruth.

As an Ambassador for Falmouth University I was able to apply for the position of event staff for the Inland Art Festival which entailed working with the organisers to deliver the 3 day event. My main role was that of invigilator; to look after various exhibition spaces in very different buildings around the town of Redruth. This meant inviting passers by into the spaces; talking to them about the festival and the future project; selling festival merchandise and providing information on additional events the festival was holding.

In this role I was able to utilise and build upon my already well developed front-of-house skills, but in a new environment. As I am very comfortable talking to people, I had no inhibitions about starting up conversation with attendees; offering them information and advice about the festival. However, although I showed confidence I felt that the festival staff were not briefed well enough on the different artists in the exhibitions to be able to discuss them in depth. As a result of this, I used my initiative to then, upon arrival to each of my venues, research the different artists and discover more about the purpose of their artwork. With this knew knowledge I could provide more detailed information to the attendees.

I enjoy going to exhibitions, therefore believe I hold a good knowledge base about art and the art world, therefore I thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the delivery of a number of exhibitions. I hope to further my experience within this sector and perhaps curate my own exhibitions in the future.

Transferable Skills; Problem Solving, Creativity, Verbal Communication
